This species is named in honor of Dr. Carmela P. Espanola, a wild life biologist from the University of the Philippines, Los Banos Laguna and one of the leading ornithologists in the Philippines, by Ulysses M. Ferreras who discovered the plant in Mt. Pinalinaw, Brgy. Reina Mercedes, Maconacon municipality, Isabela Province, Phippines. 

A miniature Hoya, it is a small epiphytic vine that develops mats of small leaves and clusters of scentless , red flowers that are quite unique in size and shape.
