Hoya multiflora 'WonderPhil' is  an internationally registered Hoya cultivar. It is the very first New Zealand Hoya cultivar that is registered internationally.

Thanks to a wonderful person in the USA, Rachel Collete Conroy of My Hoya Conservatory for all her help in getting this New Zealand’s wonderful Hoya variety in the International Cultivar Registration Authority for the genus Hoya.

Brief History:

Seeds were imported from the Philippines. Sown, germinated, grown, registered and patented (with Plant Variety Right) in New Zealand. Out of 200 seedlings that germinated are two unique seedlings which have the traits of a silvery/splashy Hoya and a full silver (ghost). We have multiplied these two seedlings by way of vegetative propagation and tissue culture by Annamarie van der Wel of flask it. I believe this is also her first commercially tissue cultured plants.

The name ‘WonderPhil’ was chosen by my husband Phil, who sow and germinated the seeds. I made a facebook post for followers to submit an ideal name for this cultivar. There were multiple entries and Phil narrowed it down to 10. The winner was decided by followers/members of Hoya Obsession NZ by way of casting votes on the 10 finalists. Jayjaysugarplum of Nelson was the winner.

So as you can see, this Hoya cultivar is a result of collaboration of people who are passionate about plants, specifically Hoyas.

This is the reason why we applied for Plant Variety Rights for this Hoya cultivar.
